Welcome Tatyana - a hydro powered Twizy

The Eco Travel Network is delighted to welcome the latest member of its Twizy fleet - Tatyana - named, I am led to believe, after a variety of tomato - entirely apt as her owners grow an entire conservatory filled with them. With a name like that, the livery possibilities are intriguing. So, watch this space.

Tatyana is based at Cae'r Hendre holiday cottage high in the Dyffryn Crawnon valley above the village of Llangynidr. As well as hiring her to their holiday cottage guests, Pip and Gil are already using her for all their local errands as well as journeys to and from their numerous art, ecology and architectural projects around the Brecon Beacons.

Tatyana also has the distinction of being the first of our ETN Twizys purchased entirely from the accumulated income from Pip and Gil's 5 year old domestic micro hydro scheme which works on the mountain spring above their home and, as an early scheme, benifitted from generous landowner and neighbour cooperation.

Tatyana, it seems, is destined for a highly active and endlessly varied life - fed on the watts from a Welsh mountain spring. She will be making her first public appearance at the annual Llangynidr Show on Sunday August 25th.

Electric Vehicle Charging at Hay Festival 2013

EV Charging station comp

The Eco Travel Network has again loaned its mobile charging station to Hay Festival for the next 2 weeks. This will be located on the main site (ask at the entrance) and will provide 2 x 13amp sockets and room for two electric vehicles to park. In case another EV turns up badly needing a charge, it might be polite to leave your mobile number on your vehicle so you can be contacted and able to negotiate charge sharing with other thirsty EV's.

There are also 2 full Zero Carbon World Charge points at Drovers Holidays & Bike Hire in Hay itself or at Westview House in nearby Llowes which is on the Festival bus route.

If you are staying locally for the Hay Festival, you might like to hire a Twizy to get to and from  the Festival site. Details here.

Eco Travel Network wins Green Transport Prize

Compressed GT Award 1

The Eco Transport Network is delighted to have won the inaugural Green Transport Prize run by Edinburgh College in partnership with St Andrews University, Edinburgh Napier University, and SEStran (South East Scotland Transport Partnership). You can read the full report in The Scotsman here.

The Eco Travel Network (ETN) operates a fleet of ultra low energy electric vehicles (Renault Twizys) in the Brecon Beacons National Park in mid Wales. Aided by a start-up grant from the Brecon Beacons Sustainable Development Fund, the ETN was launched in July 2012 as a not-for-profit company that enables visitors and residents to move around with far less energy but far more fun.

Because they use so little energy, the Twizys can be charged using solar, hydro and wind energy which is in plentiful supply in rural Wales.

Visitors to the Brecon Beacons can stay at one of our attractive member locations and enjoy exploring this beautiful area in an eco-funky vehicle. We also have a lightweight charging network of 40 pubs, cafes and attractions across the National Park who welcome visiting Twizys.

Alongside promoting the concept of ultra lightweight electric vehicles in rural areas across the UK where public transport is sparse, we plan to use the £50k Green Transport Prize to invest in the design of a more rugged rural version of a Twizy-like vehicle which would be ideally suited to such locations.

If you would like more information about the Eco Travel Network, call us on 01874 665401 or 01497 842935 or email mail @ Follow us on Twitter @ecofunkytravel

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the following for all their help and support in establishing this innovative scheme here in Wales.

Twizys star at Talgarth Walking Festival

twizy-twf-1 3Tilly, Tracy & Taffy played a starring role at the inaugral Talgarth Walking Festival over the May Bank Holiday w/e. Parked in the courtyard of the popular Talgarth Mill and Bakers' Table Cafe, they attracted the usual interest (and questions) from young and old. Visitors also enjoyed the opportunity to try a Twizy. Talgarth Mill and cafe are one of more popular charging point destinations for visiting Twizzlers - historical interest, delicious food and fabulous hills to explore above the town.

At any time of year, visitors to Talgarth can hire Taffy Twizy from Steve and Lyn at Old Radnor Barn right next to the main town car park.
